Student Empowerment Program

The goals of Student Empowerment are:

     1.  To engage the student body in activities that shed light on the topic of bullying (which is about power) and Student Empowerment.
     2.  To create a culture of Student Empowerment which is the source of anti-bullying efforts.
     3.  To continue to teach our students what it means to be good followers of Jesus in the way that we act and treat each other.

Highlights to Remember

  • Eight-five percent (85%) of children are bystanders, making them the largest group with the most potential power.
  • Bullying effects all of us: bully, victim, bystander.
  • The four types of bullying are physical, verbal, social and cyber.
  • The most important thing a child can do is to tell a trusted adult.

As a parent, there are a number of things you can do, some of them are:

  • Conversations: have on-going conversations about the topic of bullying, especially when there is a story in the news. Use these as teachable moments.
  • Educate: first educate yourself, then help educate your child. There is a lot of information and many resources out there (some listed below), use them to help guide your conversations.
  • Learn the Lingo: become familiar with the worlds of Facebook, IM, etc. The more you know, the more you can help. Learn the acronyms. Ask your child to teach you things.
  • Responsible Use: locate your computer in a central location in the home, make sure you know you child’s user names and passwords, set aside times for computer use, ask about the on-line world, consider signing a family agreement
  • Google: Enter your child’s name in a Google search and see what comes up. Set up Google alerts for members of your family.
